NovaThreads are absorbable sutures that, once placed under the skin, lift drooping skin. These threads use incredibly fine needles and technologically advanced suture made from a material called PDO (polydioxanone). PDO is widely considered to be one of the safest substances to put in the body, and it’s commonly used in surgical contexts because it’s easily absorbed by the body and doesn’t create any scarring.
A thread lift is performed using two different types of threads: smooth threads and barbed threads. To produce the natural, long-lasting results, NovaThreads use barbed threads, which easily latch onto the tissue so that when they are implanted and pulled taut, they can physically lift sagging skin. These threads are excellent for lifting the sagging areas of the lower face, such as the jowls, which cannot be corrected with fillers. This type of lower face thread lift is similar to what is achieved with a surgical lower face lift, but without the downtime and recovery.

What to Expect During Thread Lift Treatment

During your thread lift procedure, the treatment areas will first be numbed with a local anesthetic. Once you’re comfortable, the NovaThreads will be administered using an incredibly fine needle that’s been pre-loaded with the absorbable sutures. Our Palm Springs specialist will insert the needle parallel to the skin’s surface, then pull the needle out. Once placed, the NovaThreads will remain under the skin and never emerge.
One of the key benefits of this procedure is that it is only minimally invasive – placing the threads with the ultra-fine needles is the most invasive part of the entire treatment. As a result, patients don’t need to worry about extensive downtime or recovery following their procedure. Most of our patients are able to go back to work or their daily activities immediately after their visit. Some side effects like tenderness and swelling are expected; these side effects should dissipate after a week.

NovaThreads are surgical sutures that are made of polydioxanone or similar materials. The body safely and quickly absorbs this compound, which has been used in heart surgeries for over sixty years. There are two general ways in which threads are used for cosmetic purposes: the first is to lift saggy skin, and the second way is to create a “mesh” which reduces lines and wrinkles.
Thread lifting can provide results for up to two years. Patients can prolong the procedure’s longevity by taking good care of their skin with skincare routines, exercise, and proper nutrition. This all helps to encourage healthy, elastic skin
After the procedure, you may gently wash your face the same day. You can resume wearing sunscreen and makeup the following day. The face will be tender when you smile or touch your face for approximately one week. Do not massage the face for three weeks after the procedure. Doing so will likely displace the NovaThreads or move the skin into an ineffective and undesirable position and can compromise your results.
This depends entirely on your situation and desired aesthetic outcomes. We’ll place different numbers of threads in different areas to encourage lifting, skin tightening, and cell regeneration. For lifting treatments, generally 3-5 threads per side are used. For meshing, 10-50 threads are often used.
The procedure is done with a topical numbing agent and local anesthesia. Meshing threads cause little discomfort. Placement of lifting threads can be painful, but the discomfort is brief, and generally does not last for more than a minute.
Patients typically experience some bruising, swelling, and soreness for several days following the procedure, but can easily manage these issues with over-the-counter pain relief medication.
