ALL ABOUT JUVÉDERM®

Hyaluronic acid, or HA, is a naturally occurring substance that delivers volume to the skin. JUVÉDERM® fillers are long-lasting, non-surgical options that contain a modified form of HA. Fillers that include HA are a top choice for patients—over 90% of filler

Juvéderm®, which originally received FDA approval in 2006, is a minimally invasive cosmetic treatment that subtly restores facial features to a more youthful appearance. While originally developed for the correction of minor facial wrinkles and folds, the product has quickly become a go-to solution for many common signs of aging as well as enhancements. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, soft tissue dermal fillers like Juvéderm® accounted for over 2 million minimally invasive cosmetic treatments performed in 2018.

Part of the treatment’s popularity comes from the wide variety of filler formulas available within the single brand. While all have a similar hyaluronic acid base, each have different thicknesses to address various facial concerns. For example, Juvéderm® Voluma  enhances volume and contour in the mid-face and cheekbones, while Juvéderm® Volbella is perfect for filling in smoker’s lines and thinning lips.

Among the most popular options within the Juvéderm® family are Juvéderm® Ultra and Juvéderm® Ultra Plus. These state-of-the-art dermal fillers are especially for restoring youthful volume in the face, cheeks, and lips. Countless patients have also used these top dermal fillers to reduce the appearance of wrinkles around the mouth, nose, and chin. Juvéderm® Ultra and Juvéderm® Ultra Plus, made out of a smooth gel of hyaluronic acid, nourish the skin and create instant volume in the target area. These precise, simple treatments allow for natural-looking rejuvenation that targets the root causes of aging. What makes them even more remarkable is that they require no downtime and have results that can last for up to a year.

HOW DOES JUVÉDERM® WORK?

During treatment, a JUVÉDERM® filler is injected into the treatment area by a licensed specialist using a needle or cannula. JUVÉDERM® fillers add volume to the treatment area. Results with JUVÉDERM® fillers are not permanent, and retreatment is usually needed to maintain your results.

WHAT IS HYALURONIC ACID?

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a sugar naturally produced by the body that retains moisture in the skin. The main ingredient in JUVÉDERM® fillers is a modified form of HA. JUVÉDERM® fillers temporarily restore volume loss in certain areas of the face for long-lasting, natural-looking results.

WHAT IS VYCROSS® TECHNOLOGY?

Vycross® Technology is a proprietary technology designed by Allergan Aesthetics for use in the JUVÉDERM® Collection of Fillers, specifically JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC, JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA® XC, and JUVÉDERM® VOLLURE® XC.

The unique Vycross® Technology process cross-links the hyaluronic acid (HA) molecules in these JUVÉDERM® fillers (pictured right), that results in a specialized, smooth gel filler. The safety and effectiveness of Vycross® Technology has been widely studied. Ask your licensed specialist about Vycross® Technology to learn more.

Juvéderm® Ultra and Juvéderm® Ultra Plus

Juvéderm® Ultra and Juvéderm® Ultra Plus are state-of-the-art dermal fillers designed especially for restoring youthful volume in the face, cheeks, and lips; they’re also designed to reduce the appearance of wrinkles around the mouth, nose, and chin. Made out of a smooth gel of hyaluronic acid, both of these treatments can nourish the skin and create instant volume once they’re injected into the target area. These precise, simple treatments allow for natural-looking rejuvenation that targets the very root causes of aging. What makes them even more remarkable is that they require no downtime and have results that can last for up to a year.

The Science and Success Hyaluronic Acid

Part of the success of Juvéderm® Ultra and Juvéderm® Ultra Plus comes from their key ingredient, hyaluronic acid. Also called HA, hyaluronic acid is a sugar that occurs naturally in the body, and is a crucial component of keeping skin cells nourished and hydrated. Hyaluronic acid also binds the collagen and elastic stores in the skin together to keep them strong and structured.

In healthy, young skin, the body produces HA at a high volume. As we get older, however, our bodies produce less of this acid. This phenomenon causes skin to lose its ability to hold onto moisture and leads to the sagging, wrinkled skin characteristic of getting older. Dermal fillers made with hyaluronic acid help boost these shrinking stores, bringing much-needed volume to facial features.

In the case of Juvéderm® Ultra and Ultra Plus, patients get not just one boost, but two. The unique formulation of these injectable solutions relies on Hylacross™ technology to crosslink the hyaluronic acid particles in the formula. This process results in a smooth, consistent gel, allowing for softer, natural results.

The Difference Between Ultra and Ultra Plus

While both forms of this popular Juvéderm® treatment offer similar benefits, each formulation treats specific areas of the face.

Characteristics of Juvéderm® Ultra include a slightly smaller cross-linking and particle size. This softer and less viscous gel is perfect for subtle rejuvenation. This form of Juvéderm®, often recommended to treat laugh or smile lines, is also popular among younger patients who want to enhance their lip size.

Juvéderm® Ultra Plus’ formula contains a heavier particle size and higher Hylacross™ cross-linking, making its sturdy gel ideal for deeper creases and lifting sunken areas on the face. At Aesthetic Art, Dr. Kato frequently recommends Juvéderm® Ultra Plus for patients with severe facial wrinkles or deep nasolabial folds stretching from the nose to the corners of the mouth. As this formulation is thicker than traditional Juvéderm®, results tend to last a bit longer than other dermal fillers. Depending on the depth of the crease as well as the amount of filler used, some patients can enjoy their results for up to a year without requiring touch-up.

The Benefits of Juvéderm® Ultra and Juvéderm® Ultra Plus

Ultra can treat fine lines and wrinkles like nasolabial folds, smoker’s lines, and marionette lines. It can also reduce the appearance of scars. The soft gel is also excellent for lip rejuvenation. Ultra Plus can restore volume to sunken areas in the face, smooth out deep creases and wrinkles, contour the face, and dramatically enhance lip volume.

Your Treatment With Juvéderm® Ultra and Juvéderm® Ultra Plus

Another benefit of these dermal fillers is that Juvéderm® Ultra and Juvéderm® Ultra Plus take minutes to perform. First, Dr. Kato will analyze your profile to determine the right treatment and placement of shots. Then, she will deliver your treatment using a fine needle. The injectable solution not only contains lidocaine, a local anesthetic, in the formula, but the smoothness of the gels themselves makes them easier to inject.

A patient’s discomfort with the treatment will depend on their pain tolerance and the area being treated, but is typically minimal. If you desire, Dr. Kato can also provide you with a topical anesthetic. After the treatment is over, you can return to your typical activities without any downtime or recovery.

Why Choose Aesthetic Art?

Ultimately, the skill of your aesthetic physician decides your result. A less experienced cosmetic injector might lead to a poorly administered treatment rife with unsatisfactory results that fade quickly. A highly trained aesthetic physician, however, will have a better chance of creating breathtaking results that can last much longer.

Many of our Palm Springs patients have been satisfied with Aesthetic Art’s delivery of safe, natural-looking rejuvenation. For a consultation on Juvéderm® Ultra and Juvéderm® Ultra Plus, contact Aesthetic Art.
